ENGLISH PREMIER LEAGUE PREVIEW

So the EURO 2008 has come and gone. Towards the end, I was kind of getting abit bored by it. So, I did not really bother about any updates after that. Heh. Sorry, but...how many readers do I have anyway??? None?!

Anyway, with BPL coming, it is time to look at the likely champions and also the pretenders who might just topple the Top 4.

We have Man Utd, who despite all the rumours of Cristiano leaving, should retain him for this season. Without Ronaldo for the start of the season could spell a bad start to the Champions for 2008. However, I rarely doubt so. The old-timers have what it takes to hold of any challenges, but perhaps the odd draws might keep them from sweeping victories at the start of the BPL. Thanks to the missing Ronaldo. Heh.

Chelsea, looks to be the strongest so far. With a new manager, a well-known manager in fact, Chelsea could be the team to beat this season. Scolari is a shrewd manager, let down only by his team's attitude. Chelsea proves to be more headstrong than Portugal, since there are less individualistic players and more team players, I think Chelsea will be a force to reckon with this season. They should be the likely Champions...

Arsenal has a new batch of youngsters, who proved that the big stage is no longer bigger than them. However, with all the youth in the team, the experienced players may find it hard to blend with the youth, and that is the only problem I foresee Arsenal will have. However, Arsenal has not really strengthen their side with good buys, and it may prove to be fatal when the season hits midpoint. Arsenal, could be battling for 3rd and 4th again.

Liverpool has many buys, but are they great buys? They are the most active in terms of purchases and should only get stronger. However, these new players take time to blend in, and Liverpool has not been performing too well with a 1 man strikeforce. With new boy Keane, more opportunities of attacking are available, but I think other teams have gotten smarter. Kill off Torres and shut down the midfield, Liverpool cannot do nuts! So Liverpool is definitely in for a hard time, and winning the title, may yet take another year...

Tottenham had a torrid time, selling off Keane, fighting off Berbatov leaving. But they have gotten rid of Paul Robinson. This has no particularly meaning though, although I feel that Spurs may still be a surprise package this season. With Bentley in Spurs now, they should have more attacking edge. No doubt, they may have trouble defeating the Top 4, but they might still pry 4th spot from Arsenal or Liverpool. Take heed, they have improved tremendously.

Portsmouth should do fairly well this season. Harry Redknapp is a smart man, limited by the $ he has, but he has made smart purchases. The best buy I feel, is getting Peter Crouch to partner Defoe. Crouch is a fairly skillful player and I think he will be the reason why Portsmouth are going to Europe next season.

Aston Villa has an on-going feud with Liverpool for Gareth Barry, but the inspirational captain might see himself stuck in Villa this season. Despite that, Villa is going to need players to really challenge the Top 4 and I do not see that happening. They have not been making any moves in the market that look to improve their squad, and they have sold off Olef Mellberg. Trouble? Maybe...

Everton? Don't even go there. The 1 season wonder team may just fall short this time round. I foresee them struggling in mid to bottom table.

Blackburn, faltering again I believe. They lost Friedel, and Bentley. 2 of the most influential players in Blackburn...how is that going to help their cause to challenge the Top 4? Struggling to reach Europe I believe...

So the Champions I predict is Chelsea, followed by Man Utd, Liverpool, Arsenal, Spurs, Portsmouth. However, kickoff has not started, so I'll count my eggs again after the first month of the season has started. Seeya!

GRE 1-2 ESP ; RUS 2-0 SWE

I'm going to cut this short. Spain dominated the entire match with plenty of shots littered over the 90 minutes. Xabi Alonso had a very good match starting in the first 11 as captain, and he showed his trademark of spectacular goals by testing retiring goalkeeper Nikopoulidis from his own half with another wonder-strike. The Greek keeper backpedalled and in an attempt to tip the ball away (which was going inches out anyway) injured himself slightly when he collided against the goalpost.

Greece took the lead against the run of play when Charisteas headed in a beautiful free-kick unmarked. Spain tried their best to equalise in the 2nd half, and almost did so when Alonso crashed another 30yard thunderbolt against the post. Spain equalised when De La Red fired in a sweet volley after Sergio Garcia laid him off with a good header. In the final few minutes, Dani Guiza was left unmarked and the far post and headed in the winner from close range from a floating cross.

The Russian beat the Swedes convincingly with a display of football that Hiddink will be proud of. Pavlyuchenko had put Russia ahead after a low cross from the right was not dealt with by the Swedish defence and the Russian striker coolly stroke the ball in. Russia never looked like giving up the lead, with Ibrahimovic well marked by Russia.

There were very little chances for Sweden and Henrik Larsson looked lost upfront, but he was darting around smartly and almost looped a header into the net. However, Russia killed the game off in the 2nd half when Arshavin who made a starting appearance, slid in to guide home a Zhirkov's cross to put the scores 2-0 to Russia. As Sweden pushed forward, all that did was to spur Russia onto a counter-offensive where possible and Zyryanov struck the post with 10minutes to go. As the match draws to a close, Russia are going through, and Sweden are going home.

EURO 2008 - Group D Final Round

There is nothing much to say except that Spain looks to be in spectacular form so far. However, with top spot guaranteed, Luis Aragones is set to relieve his stars and field a 2nd string team to face a depleted Greece side who is heading home after this match.

Villa and Torres are expected to be rested, along with Puyol, Casillas, Ramos and Xavi. However, the replacement players although not household names, do have something to prove. In comes Reina, Alonso, Guiza and Sergio Garcia whom have proven themselves in their club teams and will now try to make a name for themselves for Spain. While staying injury is of upmost importance, Spain will be looking to be the 3rd team to claim maximum points from 3 games and mark themselves as champion favourites for this year's Euro 2008.

Greece is out of the competition, and with it, signals a whole change to the squad to take to the field against Spain. Many changes are expected, with their first team half ruled out due to injuries and suspension. While this is a trying time for the defending champions, Greece is intending to hold back the Spanish, but looking beaten already.

Russia squares off against Sweden in the final group fixture and being favourites to claim 2nd spot is the Scandinavian team in yellow. Veteran Ljurngberg will be returning to the side once again as they only need a draw (goal difference being better than Russia) to qualify for the quarter-finals. That said, Sweden will not be sitting back and look forward to their ace, Zlatan Ibrahimovic to continue his fine form and score yet again for Sweden.

Russia is certainly quiet in its preparations and has not announced to the world how it will approach the game. The Russians are passive players and at times, they look like newcomers to the big scene. However, their football is pretty and we have seen good football in their matches against Spain and Greece. While they are quiet, they will not go down silently and should be prepared to match the Swedes in terms of skill. However, their lapses of concentration sometimes prove them costly. We have seen Spain go on the counter-attack 4 times, and all attempts resulted in goals against Russia. This is not good enough and Sweden may look to capitalise on that.

Kicks 4 Kicks! believes that Spain should dispose of Greece easily, but will only be a slim victory. Russia will try their hardest and with Sweden's defence one of the hardest to penetrate, may lose and Ibrahimovic to work his magic yet again to full effect.

K4K! predicts: Spain 2-0 Greece, Russia 1-2 Sweden

FRA 0-2 ITA ; NED 2-0 ROM

France has been the biggest disappointment so far, and it showed in yesterday's performance against Italy. Unable to win all 3 matches and scoring only 1 goal, this has got to be one of the worst string of results France has ever produced. Amidst all its stars, it failed to recapture the form that took them to the World Cup finals in 2006. A host of missing experienced players meant that France is looking towards the future, but that looks bleak.

Italy on the other hand stole the highlights when they managed to sneak into the quarter-finals by beating France 2-0 and with Romania unable to beat the Netherlands. Andrea Pirlo steered home the opening goal with a well-taken penalty after Luca Toni was upended in the box. To make matters worse, the man who gave away the penalty was also sent off. Italy then killed off French hopes when Daniele De Rossi scored from a free-kick deflected in off Henry. Italians overjoyed, the French needs a total revamp.

Romania looked to be the stronger of the two when they faced off with the Netherlands. As the match went on, Romania did not have the finishing bite and with Robben and Huntelaar missing open chances, it seemed that even the Dutch were rooting for Romania to beat themselves to knock out Italy and France.

That did not happen, and when Huntelaar opened the scoring in the 2nd half, Romania went on to put on a terrible show. They failed to create any serious chance, Mutu looking out of sorts in attack. As time dragged on, Van Persie capped a fine performance from the Netherlands by scoring the match's 2nd and final goal. The Dutch finished top of Group C, Italy finished the match 2nd on the Group. France finished last and it certainly looks like game over for Domenech's reign.

EURO 2008 - Group C Final Round

This is certainly the Group of Death as many will expect, the prospect of a champion dropping out at the group stage is on the cards. Italy plays France in a do-or-die match for both teams and also, a re-match of the World Cup 2006 final.

Italy has got to be terribly disappointed with their current form, losing to the Netherlands 3-0 and then only manage a 1-1 draw with Romania. Fate is not entirely in Italy's hands (they have also got to count on Romania failing to win) and to avoid an embarrassing drop out at the group stage, they also have to beat France by at least 2 goals.

One of the more notable problems is their goalscoring ability. Del Piero is often caught in no-man's land and Luca Toni looks to be isolated up front. With Pirlo unable to provide the incisive passes, Italy looks toothless. However, as terrible as Italy may seem at the moment, they have the ability to perform when under pressure.

France on the other hand, looked tame and woeful. Netherlands comfortably dealt France a 4-1 trouncing and all hope seems lost. A draw will do France no good, and France will need a victory and hope Romania does not win their encounter against the Netherlands. If anyone thinks the French are terrible this term, you are not alone. Half the globe were expected Italy and France to head the group and looking at things now, they need to play at an exceptional level.

Expect Henry and Benzema to start, with Vieira possibly returning for this important clash.

Netherlands have nothing to play for and this is what Romania is looking to capitalise on. The Romanians know that a victory will send them to the quarter-finals and knock out both Italy and France. The Romanians also know that the Netherlands have a more important task to keep their players injury-free and card-free. Therefore, one will not expect the Romanians to hold back on attacking today.

Romania looked particularly good against France and Italy, the underdogs suddenly become favourites to go through with the Netherlands. Adrian Mutu, the culprit who missed his penalty kick against Italy, may be forgiven for his "crime" if he can send Romania to victory today. Kicks 4 Kicks! thinks that Mutu still needs to ply his trade for Fiorentina in Italy, and therefore suspects he may have purposely screwed that penalty up.

Anyway, Romania's defence looked a notch up from being wanting. In fact, the centre-back Goian played impressively against Italy, shutting out Luca Toni on countless occasions. One would expect Romania to stick to the same back-four again, however Goian picked up his 2nd yellow card and will miss the match against the Netherlands. With Goian out, there is a loophole in Romania's defence and I would expect the Netherlands (especially Van Nistelrooy) to capitalise on Goian's absence.

Kicks 4 Kicks! says Italy will beat France by 1 goal. Both teams have nothing to lose, knowing even a victory may not be enough. That said, expect a classic re-match of the World Cup 2006 final. Italy may sneak home a victory from giant Toni, producing the goods at the final moment.

However, this will not be enough as Romania will beat the Netherlands after some effort. The Netherlands will prefer to sit back and attack on the counter for this match, saving some energy and strength for the quarter-finals. This will prove to be enough for Romania as their endless pursuit of victory will see them clinch the winning goal for a 1-0 victory...possibly through Adrian Mutu...

K4K! predicts : Italy 2-1 France, Romania 1-0 Netherlands

AUS 0-1 GER ; POL 0-1 CRO

Austria gave Germany quite a scare as the host nation sent a barrage of attacks on a German team determined to hold on to a slender 1 goal lead after Ballack sent a ferocious strike into the top corner from a freekick. Germany almost took an early lead only to see Gomez lift the supposed tap-in high into the air from 1m out. From there on, Austria began an onslaught of attacks but disappointingly, none of them failed to trouble Jens Lehmann.

From a free-kick in the 2nd half, Ballack fired a rocket beyond the reach of Jurgen Macho for a 1 goal lead. It proved to be the deciding goal as Germany closed shop right after the goal. Austria tried but failed to break down Metzelder and Mertesacker in the heart of the German defence. Germany sent on veteran Neuville but all that was not required as Germany held on to win 1-0 and goes through to the quarter finals.

Croatia probably taught Poland a valuable lesson in football when Slavan Bilic made a total of 9 changes to the winning side that beat Germany 2-1. Comfortably as it seems, Poland never looked like breaking down Croatia and were not threatening. At times, Smolarek found himself with good opportunities to score but his finishing failed him.

Croatia on the other hand, pounced on the advantage rule and Klasnic scored the only goal of the game. Poland was distraughted and their attacks started to grow desperate and many times, disappointing. All Croatia had to do was to hold on to their lead, and when the final whistle blew, they know that they are currently the team to beat in this tournament with maximum points from 3 games.

EURO 2008 - Group B Final Round

Germany will find out tonight it their troubles are behind them as they meet host nation, Austria. Despite being the underdogs in this match-up, Austria are trying to show that their controversial draw is not by any means, a feeble attempt to be a top footballing nation. Austria should have won Poland when it seems that Poland had scored a goal that looked offside. However, they face up against a team that will probably not allow that sort of chance to happen.

The Germany players had an internal discussion and as captain Ballack pointed out, it cleared any doubts players had over one another. Of course, one would expect them to stroll out for an easy victory against the Austrians despite any problems. However, the Germans are not taking this game lightly. Germany will definitely be ready to tear the Austrians apart and Kicks 4 Kicks! would expect anything less than a 3 goal victory to be a surprise.

Croatia are through as leaders in Group B and will be looking to subdue the pretenders, Poland. The Poles can definitely play better than both their showings so far, and while they still need to depend on Germany to lose against Austria and hope that they beat Croatia by more goals than Austria, one can expect Poland to give this a final shot.

Many have written off both Austria and Poland, knowing how both teams need to depend on the other to have a chance of going through to the quarter-finals and nobody knows this better than Poland themselves. Croatia are high and dry and they will definitely try to avoid any major injuries or bookings. Therefore, Kicks 4 Kicks! reckon this to be an exciting match, but may very well end in only a draw.

Kicks 4 Kicks! say Germany to trounce Austria 4-0 and qualify as 2nd placed team, and Poland to draw with Croatia 1-1.

TUR 3-2 CZE ; SUI 2-0 POR

In a dramatic twist to the tale, the Turks survived a 2 goal deficit after Koller and Plasil have both given Czech a dream lead. Arda Turan who saved Turkey with a last gasp winner against Switzerland, struck again as Turkey started to claw back. In a frenzy finish, Nihat pounced on an amazing slip-up by Petr Cech who seemingly gifted the equaliser to Turkey. Within another minute, Nihat pounced on a brilliant through ball and put his shot right under the top right corner, in-off the underside of the crossbar. 3-2, and Czechs are going home early this year.

Both teams had nothing to play for but for Switzerland, it seems that salvaging some pride is the main dish this evening. After a goalless first half, with Portugal more deadly than the Swiss, it seemed as if Portugal will clinch the first goal this evening. However, Switzerland came back for the 2nd half rejuvenated. Hakan Yakin was put through by a great flick from Derdiyok, and with Ricardo to beat, he put the ball through the keeper's legs. Portugal were trying to avoid any major injuries now and hurried the game slightly, but after Meira gave away a penalty, Yakin scored the 2nd of the night as Switzerland defeated a Portugal side made up largely of 2nd-stringed players.

With that, Portugal lead Group A and Turkey takes 2nd spot, and a quarter-final clash with Croatia. Surprise, surprise...Czech Republic had only 3 things to blame for that defeat. The rain, a lapse of concentration and a moment of blunder by the goalkeeper least likely to make an error, PETR CECH. (His name is in bold only because he is a Chelsea goalkeeper. Muahaha...)

EURO 2008 - Group A Final Round

IT all comes down to the final round. This is the time where we find out who will be going through to the quarter-finals and who will be going home. Whatever the results, there are bound to be hearts broken and who will it be for Group A?

Portugal vs Switzerland

Portugal are through to the quarter-finals as the top-placed team. They will be playing Switzerland who have failed to win any points and are already out of the tournament. Winning their final game against Portugal is merely a consolation as they can only play for pride now. With the head to head record between the tied teams takes precedence over goal difference, this means that Portugal cannot be knocked off the top spot and therefore, Portugal will take the liberty to rest many key players. This probably includes Deco, Simao and Ronaldo. While Switzerland are only playing for pride, it is also a chance for the unused stars to make an appearance, therefore this game is likely not to be a thriller.

However, Portugal is a class above Switzerland and with all factors equal, Portugal is still expected to win this match. Scolari has said he is ready to rest his stars with a potential quarter-final match against Germany on the cards and ome would expect Quaresma and Nani to start.

Switzerland on the other hand, has already lost Alex Frei to injury and scoring the goals will be the real problem here. With both teams nothing to play for except clocking up the statistics, the only players who would be working hard are those with a personal vengeance to settle.\

Kicks 4 Kicks! expects Portugal and Switzerland to have a slow start to the game and Portugal to sneak home with a victory after a Switzerland gets caught out on a counter-attack.

Turkey vs Czech Republic

This is the highlight of the day as both teams will be eager to win to avoid the penalty kicks in case of a draw. Most people are still unaware of the rules that dictate who goes through to the quarter-finals in case of a tie on points during the group stages.

If 2 teams are tied on points after all matches are played, the head-to-head win will be the first decider, followed by goal difference, number of goals scored, with the penalties to be the final deciding criteria.

The results for Turkey and Czech Republic means that both teams have 3 points, both teams have scored 2 goals and conceded 3. Since both teams are playing to qualify, if the match ends in a draw, the head-to-head win criteria does not decide the winner. if it ends in a draw, both teams will have the same goal difference and the same number of goals scored. Therefore, the penalty kicks still loom over this match.

That aside, let us look at the 2 teams. Czech Republic is perhaps one of the more physical sides in this group. We have seen how Portugal struggled in the first half to keep up with the physical approach by Brueckner's side and while Turkey seems to be tougher, they need to face a Czech side desperate to win at all costs.

The Turks have seen unimpressive against Portugal and needed a last gasp winner to deny Switzerland. In fact, Switzerland led in the first half and sad to say, Turkey merely proved to be the better of the 2 that day. Nihat is bound to start the game against Czech and their only hope of beating the Czech, is with their individual flair. Turkey's passing has gone sloppy in this tournament and players certainly do not show any trickery like we used to know.

The Czechs will have Jan Koller back but the highlight of the team has been Libor Sionko. Brueckner could choose to have Sionko starting on the wing and give Baros another start alongside Koller. With height and pace and skill all starting, the Czechs look a tough nut to crack.

Kicks 4 Kicks! say Czech Republic to lead Turkey after a good move down the flanks, and with Turkey desperate to equalise, expose a few holes in defence and allow Czech to steal a 2nd. Losing discipline, Turkey will let in a 3rd late in the game and the Czechs will eventually go through to the quarter-finals.

K4K! predicts : Portugal 2-0 Switzerland, Czech Republic 3-0 Turkey

ESP 4-1 RUS ; GRE 0-2 SWE

Overwhelming, that is all about Spain. At times, their defence looks worrying, but 4 times they pounce on the counter, a Villa hat-trick and a debut Fabregas goal put them firmly in the driving seat. If Spain is to beat Sweden, they need to solve their defensive midfield problems because it just seems so vulnerable. Russia is quick and their football is not that bad, so I think they may get a good result against Greece.

Sweden proved to be the better of the 2 when they met Greece. A dull match it seems, as Greece play negatively and defended in throngs. Sweden was a little cautious to begin with but had to push forth for a winner and got the break through from Zlatan Ibrahimovic. A 2nd was added later, and Greece was undone.

The draw still stands between Spain and Sweden, and Russia still looked more menacing than Greece in terms of gameplay. I'd tip Russia to beat Greece in their encounter...

EURO 2008 - Group D

GROUP D is the last pool of teams that houses one of the hottest favourites, Spain. Many know they are capable of great football, but how often have they failed to make it past the big stage? With Russia, and Greece (defending champion) and Sweden, Spain is not guaranteed to make it to the next stage. Or have they?

Group D comprises of Spain, Russia, Greece and Sweden.

Spain - Despite what many people think about them, I think the Spanish side is full of quality this year. We have been exposed to quality this season, with stars in the BPL and LFP showing us what they can achieve. Most hopes rest on Fernando Torres, with Raul Gonzalez not in the tournament squad. As great as El Nino is, one must not forget that he is just, one man. Take a look at the others. The next man to play a big part is consistent performer David Villa. He I believe is the man who will make or break the hearts of the Russians and Greeks. Outstandingly skilful, he possesses an excellent mind that makes spot on decisions at the right moment.

If he teams up to perfection with Torres, Spain is unbeatable. Alot must be said about Spain's defence. They can hardly concentrate on defending, and usually fade away after a bright opening start. But Carlos Puyol will be in defence and this will be a major boost as he always seem so energetic. Surely, he can wake up a few sleeping Spaniards during the match! Spain has an excellent midfield and attack, and not forgetting, an excellent goalkeeper in Iker Casillas. This year, might be Spain's year...

Russia - When you talk about Russia, apart from Maria Sharapova, there is nothing much else to talk about. If you say teams fear Russia, it is because they fear Guus Hiddink, and definitely not Russia. The Russians qualify ahead of England, but they still lack the quality of the English and definitely can never outdo the Spanish. However, like we see of Zenit St Petersburg, their football is fast and when in form, they are a joy to watch. Put them under pressure, and Russia will start to fall short of quality, resorting to long balls to their strikers.

The scoring duties are likely to fall on Roman Pavlyuchenko, who is much fitter than towards the end of the Russian domestic season. However, the loss of Arshavin and Pogrebnyak might mean trouble for Russia in their opener, and I believe it is also the start of their problems.

Greece - Last round's champions and everyone expects them to perform as brilliantly as before. However, take a look at their qualifying games. The opponents in there are woeful, and if they do not qualify, that is madness. Looking further back at their World Cup 2006 form, they just withered away in form and quality and expect them to work even harder if they want to go through.

Stelios looks to be a starter in all of Greece's matches, but even he is running out of form. Top scorer Theofanis Gekas will be looking to continue his goalscoring entics in the group stages but Greece's hopes rest not just on Gekas alone, but the midfield. The holding area looks brittle and easily overrun-able...and if Greece are to stop Spain and Sweden, they need to cover quite a bit of loopholes that may simply see the defending champions go out very early.

Sweden - Never underestimate the Scandinavians. Denmark did it once with Sweden reaching the semis, and I believe Sweden will perform as well as it can in this tournament again. Familiar names amongst the Swedes, Mellberg, Kallstrom, Ljungberg, Ibrahimovic and yes, Henrik Larsson. Alot of flair and strength in their midfield, their ability to keep possession of the ball means they are often in control of the situation. Qualifying behind Spain, (even beating Spain once at home) Sweden looks to be in fine form and Larsson is one happy veteran looking to shine in what seems like his last tournament.

With Ibrahimovic injured and unable to last a full match, Larsson is expected to hit all fronts for Sweden. Larsson swore to retire after Sweden's last match against Germany at the World Cup but was tempted back for Euro 2008. Will this be a timely fairwell for Larsson, to end his international career on the big stage with a brilliant all round performance?

Kicks 4 Kicks! says Spain should comfortably beat Russia in its first encounter, and then slog it out for a hard-earned draw against Sweden. Their superior goal difference will be vital as they stay at the top with an easy victory over Greece. Sweden, like-wise should have no problem beating Greece, but may have a slight problem overcoming Russia. Still, I think Sweden should be good enough to beat the Russians by 1 goal. Russia and Greece is all but a formality, and Russia should be triumphant here, although it will not be enough for them.

K4K! predicts : Spain, Sweden, Russia, Greece

ROM 0-0 FRA ; NED 3-0 ITA

France and Romania were equally disappointing with a goalless draw, both teams overly cautious of each other. Romania played Mutu often on the flanks and he only managed to threaten once, when he cut into the centre. Ribery was lost, Anelka was off, France were not penetrating. Both teams now need to win their next game to any any chance of going through.

Italy were woeful and awful. Netherlands proved to be the hungrier of the team and 2 first half goals from Sneijder and van Nistelrooy set them on a fantastic victory over Italy. Van Bronckhorst added a 3rd in the second half, the damage was already done by then.

This changed how Group C will turn out. After watching their performances, it seems even France may not stop the Oranje. With Italy desperate for 3 points against Romania, knowing that their final game against France will be crucial, my bet is for France to fail. Netherlands may simply just steamroll their way past all 3 other teams to top the group, with France falling short in their final game against Italy. No hope for Romania now, if they fail to beat Netherlands.

Prediction is now, Netherlands, Italy, France, Romania.

EURO 2008 - Group C

GROUP C has been named the "Group of Death". Yet, in every tournament, the infamous Group has seen a team failing to perform up to its standards. This year is no different, and with the injuries piling up in the Italy and Dutch camps, and the lack of form in the French camp shows that one of the hot favourites is going home early this tournament. (Well, one of them has to anyway, hahahaha!)

Group C comprises of France, Italy, Netherlands and Romania.

France - Billed as World Champion in 1998 and Europe Champion in 2000, France is often touted as one of the favourites. Runners-up in World Cup 2006, they lack the French midfield maestro Zinedine Zidane who has since retired from international football. With Zidane gone, France are looking for a talisman who will bring glory to the French.

Bundesliga's player of the season, Franck Ribery has been in outstanding form whole season, and he will definitely be a man to look out for. However, he tends to hold the ball longer than expected and the smooth-flowing football France often produces(when Zidane is around) has since turned into a rough ride. Apart from Ribery, one man is expected to contest the top goalscorer award. Karim Benzema currently playing for Olympique Lyonnais has proven to be a potent scorer and with Henry out of form, Benzema is expected to deliver the goods in this tournament. A little defensive than before, France has not been scoring freely in warmup matches, but come the tournament, people should expect to see a French team worthy of challenging for the champions trophy.

Italy - World champions in World Cup 2006, Italy are expected to perform in Euro 2008 and they certainly are not showing it so far. With Inzaghi is missing from the tournament, all hope rests on the big striker Luca Toni, Ribery's team mate in Bayern Munich. Veteran Del Piero is lining up front with Toni, and frankly speaking, those resting their hopes on the 2 delivering the goods may be disappointed.

Cannavaro is ruled out of the tournament, Panucci and Cassano is facing a struggle to be fit and while defending has not been a major problem for the Italians, this time is a cause for concern. Expect an aggressive approach to their football to prevent the opponents from over-running the defence and as before, the number of goals scored will be scarce and few.

Netherlands - a team hit worst than Italy in terms of injury, Netherlands have their left flank effectively ruled out due to injury. Robben has been ruled out of the opener and Babel, out of the tournament. While van Persie is expected to provide the cover down the left, he too is not fit and most certainly will not feature in the opening match. One would expect van Basten to fill the left midfield position with Dirk Kyut has has been effectively down the flank for Liverpool.

However, van Basten has not disclosed any secrets but one is expecting Netherlands to play quick, possessive football and plenty of ground passes. The firepower upfront is impressive, with Huntelaar, van Nistelrooy and Jan Vannegoor all looking to get on the scoresheet. But van Basten has known to be a cautious person, and with injuries piling up, he may not risk his midfielders and might look to play a 4-5-1 team to cover for his missing 3 against Italy.

Romania - A little unknown about Romania, although they do play a mixture of passing and keep-ball. There are familiar names like Contra, Chivu and Mutu. Qualifying ahead of the Netherlands, they managed to end up in the same group again. They were pretty good at getting goals in qualifying and they will be looking for Mutu and Marica to bag the goals again.

Playing tight football, Romania often falls to quick counter-attacking football. Their lapse of concentration during open-play also cost them dear in tournaments, but in every tournament that Romania plays, there is always a star in their team who always perform. This year, many think that Adrian Mutu, who has matured for his age, will have a heavy burden to carry. Even the French has listed Mutu as a key dangerman for Romania. Not much can be said about this team, but they do give their football something to shout for.

Kicks 4 Kicks! says that France and Romania may play out to a draw or a 1 goal victory for the Les Bleus. Italy and Netherlands should be tight and fiery, but Italy should clean their act up with a vital winner. A possible draw might be on the cards when France plays Italy, and Netherlands to beat Romania for a vital 3 points. But heartache for Netherlands as France wins their encounter and Italians run clear at the top with a convincing victory against Romania.

AUS 0-1 CRO ; GER 2-0 POL

Austria tried their best to get back into the game but if you watched the match, you can understand why Austria can never score a goal. All of them were banking on crosses, and their crosses all fall short or went over, how do they expect to score a goal? Croatia probably under-estimated the Austrians and were lucky to have that penalty which turned out to be the only goal of the game. Croatia should buck up in the next game, but things have changed and they might even lose to Germany if they continue to play the way they did yesterday.

Germany and Poland was a pretty tough encounter. While many expected Germany to walk over their opponents, it was clear that Poland had played superbly. Unfortunately, the Poles did not take their chances. Germany did, and from 10 shots, 2 hit the back of the net. Podolski scored in either half as he capped on a fine performance to lead the Germans to a 2-0 victory. Top of the group for Germany with Croatia 2nd. Unfortunate Poland is now last, but I am expecting them to put up a better show in their next match...

SUI 0-1 CZE ; POR 2-0 TUR

Switzerland just could not do anything against a robust Czech Republic, and this proved to be a major factor as Sverkos managed to burst down the middle after a fine through ball and slot the ball coolly into the right corner for the only goal of the match.

Portugal proved to be stronger than Turkey as Pepe scores the first, then Meireles settled the tie with a fine finish late in the game. Portugal almost dominated the game, Turkey had some chances but failed to capitalise on them.

Portugal now leads Group A, Czech on 2nd with a goal behind the leaders. Switzerland is 3rd and Turkey is right at the bottom of the group.

With Raúl left out, how far will Spain go?
